Well, we can't say we're surprised, but we're sad for the early adopters of StackExchange who probably now feel kicked to the curb. The hosting prices originally announced were astronomical, and we knew almost immediately after trying SE that we'd be better off in an open source project, so we got OSQA rolling.
Here's a simple deal. If you're one of the soon-to-be-homeless SE site owners, then grab your data dump and we'll set you up with free hosting on an OSQA-powered server. It'll be your job to maintain your site, but we'll give you a home for a year or more, and you can keep trying to build up whatever you were working on. You can always get a hosting account someplace and run your own OSQA server, too.
We never had any desire to be in the hosting business, but since OSQA is backed by DZone we have tremendous server horsepower and bandwidth. We'll be glad to accept refugees from Joel and Jeff's change of direction. Send us your tired, your weary and your homeless.
